                                  KUBYK
a knight's-move puzzle game for the ZX Spectrum
==========================================================================

Original game .......... Javier Torres, 1986 (BASIC)
  Machine code version ... namco/nexgen, 2026

KUBYK is Javier Torres's game. He wrote it in Sinclair BASIC in May
1986 and it was published as a type-in listing in MicroHobby. All the
credit for the idea, the rules and the look of the game is his. This
version was typed in from the printed listing and rewritten in Z80
machine code, so it plays at full speed while looking the same as the
  original. Thank you, Javier.

THE GAME
--------
The board is a slab of 10 x 10 cubes. Remove them all.

The first cube can be any cube. After that, each cube you remove must
be a knight's jump away from the last one (as in chess: two squares one
way and one square to the side). You can only land on a cube, never on
  a hole.

The big number counts the cubes you have removed, the box below it
counts the cubes left, and the clock runs from the moment the board
  appears.
Take all 100 cubes in the least time you can.

When no knight's jump from the last cube lands on a cube, the game is
  over.

KEYS
----
  Q ............ up A ............ down
  O ............ left P ............ right
M ............ remove the cube under the cursor
H ............ hint: the cubes you can jump to turn green (+5 s)
E ............ retry: the last cube comes back, press again to go
                 further back (+10 s)
  0 ............ give up

The penalty seconds are added to the clock one by one, shown in red.
The keys work with CAPS LOCK on too.

END OF A GAME
-------------
When you give up, get stuck, or clear the board, the bottom of the
screen shows how it went (and NEW BEST! for a record) and offers:

R ............ replay: the whole game shown again, move by move
M ............ back to the menu
E ............ retry: the last cube comes back and the game goes on
                 (+10 s) (not after clearing all 100)

MENU AND BEST SCORES
--------------------
At power-on the instructions are typed out. Press any key to skip
them and go straight to the game.

The menu shows the instructions and then turns to the best scores:
the best game (most cubes, then least time), the best full clear, and
the last game. They are kept while the machine is on. Press any key
  on either page to start.

LOADING
-------
  48K, +2, +3 or 128K (use 48 BASIC or the tape loader):

      LOAD ""

The game runs on any 48K Spectrum with the beeper, as the original.
On a 128K, or with an AY sound interface, the music and the sound
effects play on the AY chip.

FILES
-----
kubyk.tap ....... the game (BASIC loader + code)
  kubyk.sna ....... a 48K snapshot of the same
  KUBYK.TXT ....... this file
